Kevin Gates blessed his fans this week (Sept. 7) with a new freestyle over the AXL Beats-produced instrumental to Fivio Foreign’s Trust,” where he talks about his mental health and physical, past actions, and faith:
Gates dropped an Instagram post just before the release of the song that showed him performing the emotional tribute. The warm weather isn’t over yet, so there should be plenty more where this came from.
The last time we heard Gates’ sophomore LP I’m Him was two years ago, which featured 17 tracks with no features. I’m Him earned Gates a gold certification in the United States for being a commercial success; it landed him in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart thanks to the 72,000 album equivalent units it sold during its first week of release. The following year, fans received a new mixtape, Only The Generals II, and a number of well-received freestyles and collaborations, including “Difficult,” “Grandmotha Grave,” “Still Hold Up,” “No Security” with Fredo Bang, “Broken Love” with the late MO3, “Wonderland,” “Power” “Weeks,” with Dermot Kennedy, and last but not least, “Boat To Virginia” with Renni Rucci. Even showcasing freestyles on other hits by SPOTEMGOTTEM and Pooh Shiesty, Gates can be heard. Khaza, the long-awaited album from the rapper, is still under construction.
