Emmett Till And His Mother Will Receive Gold Medal Posthumously

Senate passed a bipartisan bill, which specifies to posthumously award Emmet Till and his mother with the Congressional Gold Medal. In 1995, Emmet Till and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley were killed by white extremists.

The Congressional Gold Medal is considered the highest civilian award. This award was introduced by North Carolina Richard Burr and Cory Booker in 2020. Booker stated about the death of Emmet Till and Mamie Till.

He said that their death was the biggest horrific racist attack faced by African Americans. He said I was so happy with the decision to award Emmet Till and his mother with a Congressional award. He added that they both are true examples of courage and bravery. Till was a 14-year-old boy, but he set a true example of bravery. He appreciated the efforts of Till and his mother.

Till was only a 14-year-old boy. He came to visit his family in Mississippi. Here he was kidnapped and beaten. Later he was killed and falsely accused of sexually harassing Carolyn Bryant Donham. Emmet Till’s family charged his husband Roy Bryant and brother Donham with Till’s death. Later, they admitted that they killed the 14-year-old Emmet Till because of his race and color.

But Donham said that Emmet Till made sexual advances at her. He grabbed her hands and tried to harass her. After hearing the statement of Donham, the Department of Justice closed Emmet Till’s case. But the Donham’s statement proved wrong, and Till’s family claimed to reopen his case.
